Do Make it Cheaper Over-Promise?

Claim: “Find the Cheapest”

Make it Cheaper claim “Find the cheapest energy suppliers in Australia with Make it Cheaper.”

Getting technical for a moment, this statement is part of the ‘meta description’, meaning that Google display this sentence when you find ‘make it cheaper’ via a search. Google also use the meta information to judge the relevance of a website to your search. So make it Cheaper are trying to associate the word ‘Cheapest’ with their service.

But is this claim true?

In Victoria, there are 25 energy providers and each of them has different rates and different plans. The rates vary on peak, off peak and shoulder time slots, controlled loads and demand charges. The supply charge, also known as service charge or fixed charge, also varies among the providers. On top of that there are various discount schemes offered by these providers, making it a nightmare for a customer to select the best provider.

There are a number of comparison services which have sprung up to help customers choose the best suited provider. A customer would naturally expect a service to compare all the providers and all the rates using all the permutations and combinations available.

Compare Every Provider?

How many of the said comparison services are doing this?

There are a number of comparison services which have sprung up to help customers choose the best suited provider. A customer would naturally expect a service to compare all the providers and all the rates using all the permutations and combinations available.

As they state in their website, ‘Make it Cheaper’ compares the rates only among 13 suppliers, but eliminating 2 of the 3 variations of AGL, the number becomes 11, less than half of the 25 providers. It is also a well known secret that these selected providers pay a commission to ‘Make it Cheaper’ for each customer signed up through them and Providers require ‘Make it Cheaper’ not to prompt the customer to switch again for a period understood to be two years. It could be that customers MAY ‘find the cheapest’ but only when the Cheapest Providers and Plans are actually available through Make It Cheaper.

At Energy Umpire, the consumer can be rest assured of the rates getting compared with all the 25 providers and all their plans.
